Tatarian Dogwood, Red-barked Dogwood, or Siberian Dogwood (Cornus alba ‘Sibirica Variegata’)
Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. It is a medium-sized, suckering, deciduous shrub that forms a thicket of vibrant, deep red stems lasting all year. The red stems look stunning in the snow! Ours came from Bklyn Botanic Garden’s Plant Giveaway in 2018 or 19. It was the most expensive plant we got (around $60), and we brought it home on our lap in the cab. It’s been slightly sick. Please water the roots directly in summer (no overhead watering)!! We also need to decide how big/small we want to keep it… It’s getting bigger every year.

Family: Cornaceae
Native Range: Eastern and nnorthern Asia, spanning across Siberia, northern and central China, Manchuria, and Korea.
Zone: 3-7
Height: 4-10 feet
Spread: 5-8 feet
Maturation Period: 4-5 yrs
Bloom Time: May to June
Bloom Description: small, creamy-white or yellowish-white flowers gathered in flat-topped clusters. While famous primarily for its bright red winter stems, the flowers provide nice multi-season interest and attract pollinators before turning into white or blue-tinged berries by late summer.
Sun: Full sun to part shade
Soil: organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils. It is not fussy about soils, provided they are kept evenly moist and well-drained. Tolerates many conditions, including wet, dry, and poor soils
Maintenance: Low
Suggested Use: Ornamental, shrub borders, hedge or screen, or let it grow large for naturalistic plantings, banks and slopes (erosion prevention)
Flower: small, white
Fruit: white or blue-tinged berries (not edible for humans, bitter, but birds love them)
Attracts: Birds, Bees, Butterflies, small birds including robins, cardinals, and waxwings.
Leaf: Foliage shifts to vibrant shades of brick red, crimson, purple, or gold before dropping in winter.
Watering: Average needs.
Fertilizing: No need.
Basic Care Instructions:
June to August: Avoid overhead sprinkling; water the base of the shrub directly. Slow and deep watering once a week to avoid underwatering. Don’t water deeply too often.
Mid-October to November: Rake and remove fallen leaves to reduce overwintering fungus and improve airflow.
February to March (Pruning): Every 1-3 years, prune up to 1/4 to 1/3 of the oldest stems while the plant is dormant before new leaves come out. This encourages vibrant red or yellow stem colors for the following winter and keeps the shrub compact. Avoid pruning in summer or fall, as new growth will not have time to harden off before frost. Also prune crowded or crossing branches.
Disorders, Diseases, and Treatments:
When stressed, the shrub is susceptible to disease issues, including dogwood anthracnose, powdery mildew, leaf spot, canker, root rot, and leaf and twig blight. See this page for Dogwood pests and diseases. Chemical controls are rarely needed.
If wilting, check:
Underwatering: Symptoms: dry, curled leaf edges, crispy brown tips, and an overall limp or drooping. Remedy: Slow and deep soak once a week in summer.
Overwatering or Root Rot: Symptoms: Yellowing leaves; wilting or droop; soft or black roots; algae or moss (green growth or sour-smelling topsoil). Remedy: Let the soil dry out. Remove mulch and improve drainage.
Stem or Trunk Damage: Pests, lawnmower bumps, or voles can chew through the bark and block water from reaching the leaves. Inspect the main stems right at the soil line.
Fungal diseases: (leaf spot, botryosphaeria canker, powdery mildew): The fungus enters through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or environmental stress like drought. Management: Prune away infected dead wood well below the visible canker during dry weather. Clean your pruning tools with alcohol between cuts. Keep the plant well-mulched and watered during dry spells to prevent stress.
Propagation: Softwood cuttings in summer or hardwood cuttings / live stakes in late fall and winter. Take 6-inch stems from healthy growth, strip lower leaves, dip the base in rooting hormone, and plant them in a moist, well-draining sand-and-coir mix

Sol: Pleno sol a sombra parcial.

(Cornus alba ‘Sibirica Variegata’)

Cornaceae
