Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera), a.k.a. Sawara false cypress, Japanese falsecypress

The Sawara cypress, also known as the Sawara false cypress, is a The Sawara cypress is a popular evergreen conifer native to Japan that features soft, feathery foliage and peeling reddish-brown bark. NY Tree Map says we have 2. But I think the Forestry crew cut one down. We still have one, near the cat house, in the bamboo forest along the gate. And it appears to be very unhealthy. All the foliage has fallen or browned and dried up. It is almost bare. It probably doesn’t get enough sun, and maybe it’s because of pests. We want to investigate it. It was not on the Forestry pruning list. We may be the only who care for this tree.

The genus name Chamaecyparis comes from the Greek words chamai (dwarf/low to the ground) and kyparissos (cypress). The species epithet pisifera is Latin for “pea-bearing,” highlighting its tiny, pea-sized cones.

Family: Cupressaceae (Cypress family)

Native Range: Japan, Korea

Zone: 4-8

Height: 50 to 70 feet in the wild, 20-30 in the urban gardens.

Spread: 10 to 20 feet

Diameter: 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters) in the wild, though exceptional mature trees can grow up to about 7 feet (2 meters)

Appearance: Features a dense, pyramidal or columnar shape with blue-green to dark green needles that often bronze or turn plum-purple in the winter. It has reddish-brown, shredding bark.

Habitat: moist, well-drained soils along mountain streambanks and slopes in central and southern Japan. Mountainous regions, frequently found near streams, ravines, and moist valleys.
Prefers cool, humid environments with moderate-to-high atmospheric moisture and adequate rainfall.

Fruiting: It is monoecious (producing both male and female cones on the same tree). The female cones are globose, dark brown when ripe, and exceptionally small—only about 1/4 inch (5–8 mm) in diameter.

Maturation Period: 20 to 50 years in the wild. Reproductive maturation: A young tree transitions out of its juvenile stage at around 5 years. At this point, it establishes its characteristic peeling reddish-brown bark, develops a dense feathery canopy, and begins its ongoing cone production.

Bloom Time: It doesn not flower. Male cones come out, release pollen in late March through April, and after pollination, female seed cones form.

Leaves: The standard species features flat, feathery sprays of scale-like dark green leaves with distinct whitish, glaucous markings on the undersides. When crushed, the foliage emits a distinct resinous aroma.

Bark: Distinctive reddish-brown to chestnut bark that is fibrous and peels off in long, thin vertical strips

Sun: full sun to part shade. Full sun provides the densest foliage and best color.

Soil: moist, fertile, and well-drained loamy soil. It prefers a slightly acidic environment and strictly dislikes wet, poorly drained, waterlogged soils.

Maintenance: Generally low maintenance and requires minimal pruning. Once fully established, it tolerates mild drought.

Use: ornamental landscaping and high-quality lumber production. While the wild tree can scale up to 70 feet or more, it is most widely valued in Western horticulture through its highly specialized dwarf and colored cultivars. Due to its slow-to-moderate growth rate and responsive reaction to structural pruning, the Sawara cypress is an exceptionally popular candidate for traditional Japanese bonsai.

Attracts: Birds and small animals.

Watering: Established tree only need supplemental watering during hot, dry spells or long summer droughts. But it looks like our Sawara needs more water, and love.

Fertilizing: It is a low-maintenance, light feeder that requires little to no supplemental fertilizer. But our Sawara needs a btmore soil care because it is in the bamboo forest.

Pruning: requires very little routine pruning, needing only light shaping or deadwood removal in early spring.

Why the Bamboo Forest is Killing the Cypress (sigh… what should we do?)

Environmental ThreatImpact on Sawara Cypress
Moisture StarvationBamboo drinks immense amounts of water. The delicate, fine foliage of a Sawara Cypress turns brittle and browns almost immediately if its root system drops below minimum moisture levels.
Nutrient DepletionBamboo grows rapidly and strips vital nitrogen and acidic organic matter out of the shared substrate, leaving the cypress structurally undernourished.
Light DeficitDense bamboo canopies create total shade. While Sawara Cypress can tolerate minor partial shade, heavy shade causes severe interior dieback and canopy thinning.

Common Pests: While generally highly pest- and disease-resistant, the Sawara Cypress can occasionally attract a few specific insects:

  • Bagworms: The most common pest attracted to the fine foliage of the Sawara Cypress, which they use to construct their protective cases.
  • Spider Mites: Can be drawn to the inner foliage, particularly during hot, dry summer spells.
  • Scale Insects: Occasionally target the branches and sap of the tree.

Environmental Stress and Fungal Diseases:

  • Drought and Scorch: Dry soil, hot winds, or excessive direct sun cause needle tips to turn brown. Ensure steady watering and mulch the root zone. Inadequate watering is another leading cause of Sawara cypress problems.
  • Root Rot (Phytophthora species): Foliage turns pale green, dull bronze, or rust-red, and the tree declines or dies as roots decay in soggy, poorly drained soil. The outer root tissue easily slips away from the inner core. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid overwatering. Severely infected trees cannot be saved and must be removed.
  • Phomopsis / Tip Blight: Branch tips turn brown and die back, sometimes producing dark pustules on leaves or bark during wet weather. Young plants and nurseries are most vulnerable. Prune out infected tips during dry weather, cutting well below the damaged area and sterilizing tools between cuts
  • Canker Diseases (such as Seiridium or Botryosphaeria): Older foliage yellows or browns, accompanied by resin oozing, waxy buildup, or sunken lesions on the bark that cut off water supply. Prune affected branches during dry periods and reduce plant stress through proper watering

Sol: Pleno sol a sombra parcial.

  • Spider Mites:
  • Scale Insects:
