Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)

The Eastern hemlock, also known as the Canadian hemlock, is a graceful, long-lived (400-1000+ years!) evergreen conifer native to eastern North America. It is a large, pyramidal tree with soft, drooping branches and a distinctive nodding or curving top leader. Say the word “hemlock,” and people’s faces immediately pale as they think of deadly poisonous species like poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) and water hemlock (Cicuta maculata), which belong to the carrot family. Although sharing the same name, Eastern Hemlock is actually an edible evergreen tree that’s not even related to poisonous hemlocks (it is in the pine family)!

Family: Pinaceae (Pine Famiily)

Native Range: eastern North America (US and Canada), stretching from Georgia and Alabama in the south to Minnesota and Ontario in the northern and western edge of its range, and east to Nova Scotia.

Zone: 3-8

Height: Grows slowly up to 100 feet!

Spread: 25-35 feet

Maturation Period: 250-300 yrs! They begin producing their first cones and seeds between 15 and 40 years of age. I wonder if our hemlock is producing cones or will start… Young hemlocks can remain suppressed in deep shade as small understory trees for 25 to 200+ years.

Lifespan: 400-1000 years! It’s one of the longest-living trees in eastern North American forests.

Bloom Time: Late April to early June in NY

Bloom Description and reproductive cycle: Eastern hemlock is monoecious (meaning “one house”) when it has separate male and female parts on a single tree. In late April-May, small, light-yellow male clusters form at the base of the previous year’s needles, and inconspicuous, pale-green female conelets develop at the tips of the branches. Wind dispersal of pollen usually peaks in May, typically starting about two weeks after the tree’s leaf buds open. Following pollination, the female conelets gradually mature into small, woody brown cones and release their seeds from mid-September through October.

Fruit: Produces tiny, abundant brown seed cones that are rounded or egg-shaped and 1/2 to 1 inch long that hang from branch tips.

Leaves: Flat, dark-green needles with two faint white lines of stomata (pores) on the underside. The needles are 1/4 to 3/4 in length, flat, and rounded at the tip. Each needle is born on a tiny peg-like base and they appear to grow in two flat rows along the twig. The underside of the needles are whitish in color, with a green midvein that gives them a striped appearance. The needles of hemlock are high in vitamin C and can be used much the same way as other edible evergreens

Sun: Highly shade-tolerant. It thrives in part to full shade. It must be protected from harsh, drying winter winds and intense, scorching afternoon sun.

Soil: cool, moist, and acidic soils along mountains, coves, and forests

Maintenance: Low, once established in the proper environment. However, because it has strict environmental requirements and is highly susceptible to a devastating invasive pest, its real-world care level is often considered medium to difficult.

Suggested Use: According to the Edible Hemlock site, “Hemlock makes a lovely tea. Harvest the needles and small twigs all together. Prepare a decoction by bringing 1/2 cup coarsely chopped twigs to a boil, then simmer about 10 minutes. Strain and add sweetener if you choose. You can adjust the strength by adding more or less twigs or by simmering for a shorter or longer period. Medicinally, hemlock tea helps relieve cold, cough, and fevers. It also builds immunity and is particularly useful at the onset of a cold or flu, but it can also lessen the duration of an illness that has already set in. Hemlock tea is also wonderful for soothing sore throats, especially with a spoonful of honey added in! *Safety note: some sources warn against ingesting hemlock while pregnant or breastfeeding. The only reasoning for this I could find was due to the high vitamin C content. This isn’t particularly compelling to me and I know evergreens often get lumped together as being unsafe during pregnancy when that’s really not the case for every species. However, you may want to talk to a medical professional before consuming medicinal doses just to be on the safe side.”

Attracts: songbirds, small mammals, and native moths.

Watering: The water maintenance level is high. Zero drought tolerance. It has a very shallow root system and requires consistently moist, well-draining soil. You must water it weekly during dry spells or summer heat (!!! that’s why it’s not doing well)

Fertilizing: Rarely needed. It generally does fine without fertilizer. If desired, a slow-release evergreen fertilizer can be applied in early spring. Note: Avoid nitrogen fertilizer if HWA pests are present, as it fuels their population.

Pruning: Optional. Left alone, it grows beautifully into a large, elegant tree and requires no pruning except to remove dead or damaged wood. However, it tolerates shearing exceptionally well if you choose to maintain it as a formal hedge.

For diseases and pests, see this page and this page. Photos are borrowed from those sites, too.

Pest: Pest maintenance level is Critical.

  • Extremely vulnerable to Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA, Adelges tsugae), a tiny aphid-like sap-sucking insect that can kill the tree if left untreated. It is native to Japan and was accidentally introduced to eastern North America in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Requires regular inspection for white, cotton-like masses under the needles.
  • Elongate Hemlock Scale (EHS) (Fiorinia externa): A tiny armored scale insect with flat, elongated waxy covers found on the undersides of needles. EHS drains plant nutrients, causing needle yellowing and premature drop, and frequently co-occurs with HWA infestations.
  • Hemlock Rust Mite: A microscopic, four-legged, triangular mite that punctures foliage, turning dark green needles into a mottled yellow or grayish-green.
  • Spruce Spider Mite: Pierces and sucks sap from needles, resulting in a stippled, yellowish-gray appearance on older foliage.
  • Hemlock Looper: A native caterpillar/moth larva that can rapidly defoliate entire trees during high-population outbreaks.

Common Diseases & Pathogens

  • Cytospora Canker (Valsa tsugae / Cytospora): A fungal infection that creates slightly sunken cankers on bark, effectively girdling and killing individual branches.
  • Fabrella Needle Blight (Fabrella tsugae): Causes needles—especially on the lower canopy—to turn brown and drop in late summer. Small black or white fungal fruiting structures appear in lines on the needle undersides. It rarely harms healthy trees unless they face other stresses like drought.
  • Cone and Twig Rust (Melampsora farlowii): A fungus covering cones and twisting twigs with dusty, yellowish spores. It generally requires no active control in natural settings.
  • Tip Blight (Sirrococcus tsugae): Causes tip die-back, though it usually has a mild overall impact on the health of eastern hemlocks

Tsuga oriental (Tsuga canadensis)

(Tsuga canadensis)

  • Hemlock Rust Mite:
  • Spruce Spider Mite:
  • Hemlock Looper:

  • Cytospora Canker (Valsa tsugae / Cytospora):
  • Cone and Twig Rust (Melampsora farlowii):
  • Tip Blight (Sirrococcus tsugae):

Chat GPT’s Note (!! I did not ask to add it!!):
