Inkberry (Ilex glabra), a.k.a. Gallberry, inkberry holly

Inkberry is a hardy, low-maintenance evergreen shrub that tolerates wet feet and handles shearing well. It makes an excellent, disease-resistant alternative to boxwoods. We have one in the meadow in front of the hydrangeas.

Family: Aquifoliaceae (holly family)

Native Range: Eastern and south-central North America. Considered rare or endangered in northern edge states like Maine, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

Zone: 5 to 9

Height: 4 to 8 feet

Spread: 4 to 8 feet

Diameter: 1/4 to 3/8 inch (about 5 to 8 mm)

Appearance: Features a dense, pyramidal or columnar shape with blue-green to dark green needles that often bronze or turn plum-purple in the winter. It has reddish-brown, shredding bark.

Habitat: low, wet woods, swamps, bogs, coastal sphagnum bogs, moist pine flatwoods, sandy seashore settings, and the edges of forests or rocky barrens.

Maturation Period: 10-20 years. Slow-growing, long-lived. Reproductive maturity 3-4 years. It is dioecious (having separate male and female plants). Female plants will only produce their signature black berries if a male pollinator is nearby.

Lifespan: 40+ years.

Bloom Time: Late May through June in Bklyn

Bloom Description: Small, inconspicuous, and greenish-white. The flowers appear on the current season’s growth, but the flower buds actually form on the previous year’s “old wood.”

Leaves: Smooth, dark green, spineless leaves (unlike traditional spiny hollies)

Fruits: Produces small, jet-black berries in the fall on female plants (if a male pollinator is nearby) in September and October.

Sun: full sun to partial shade

Soil: acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.0), moist, and boggy soils, but adapts well to average garden soil. It tolerates wet feet much better than boxwoods, but will struggle and turn yellow in alkaline soil.

Maintenance: Low-to-moderate. It needs specific soil conditions to thrive and regular pruning to keep it from looking bare at the bottom.

Use: A versatile evergreen shrub used for landscaping (boxwood Alternative, good for rain gardens, landslide prevention), wildlife support, and historical culinary and medicinal remedies. Spring flowers provide nectar for honeybees, producing a highly rated honey known as gallberry honey. Dark berries persist into late winter to feed wild turkeys, quail, and songbirds, while dense foliage offers winter shelter. Acts as a host plant for caterpillars of the Henry’s Elfin butterfly. Native Americans and early colonists dried or roasted the leaves to brew a black tea-like beverage. Historically used in traditional practices to treat colds, fevers, respiratory issues, and skin conditions. Branches and foliage were crafted into wreaths and celebratory garlands.

Attracts: Songbirds, bees, butterflies

Watering: Water every 7 to 10 days during normal weather. Increase frequency to every 5 to 7 days during extended hot, dry summer spells. Mature plants can survive short dry periods on their own.

Fertilizing: Because Brooklyn’s urban soils are frequently disturbed, compacted, and lean toward a neutral or slightly alkaline pH, our inkberry will benefit from a light application of fertilizer under specific circumstances. It prefers acidic soil, so avoid standard multi-purpose garden fertilizers, which can alter soil chemistry in ways hollies dislike. Top-dressing the root zone with compost, leaf mold, or pine needle mulch naturally mimics a forest floor, gently lowering soil pH over time while providing steady nutrients. Fertilize it if we notice indicators of nutrient stress below:

The Foliage is Turning Pale Green or Yellow: Inkberries are acid-loving plants. If the leaves are losing their dark, glossy green luster, it usually indicates an iron or nitrogen deficiency caused by alkaline soil blocking nutrient uptake.
Growth Has Completely Stalled: If you want a denser hedge or faster growth to establish a screen, a light feeding can give it a boost.
The Plant is Mature and “Leggy”: If the shrub is dropping lower leaves and looking thin at the base, combining a light feeding with rejuvenation pruning can stimulate full, flush growth.

Pruning: Naturally tends to get “leggy” (losing its lower leaves over time). Annual pruning in early spring helps maintain a dense, compact shape. Do so in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. Pruning right after they bloom in the summer will accidentally cut away the developing berries (but I don’t know if our inkberry is male or female)

Common Pests or Diseases: Inkberry is naturally a very tough, low-maintenance, and pest-resistant evergreen shrub, but it can occasionally suffer from a few specific issues:

Common Diseases

  • Black Root Rot (Thielaviopsis): A serious soil-borne fungal disease that attacks the roots, causing black lesions, yellowing or lighter green leaves, leaf drop, and dieback. It typically happens in poorly drained or overly compacted soils.
  • Leaf Spot: Fungal leaf spots can pop up, especially during wet weather or when plants are watered from overhead systems that keep the foliage wet for too long. It rarely kills the plant.
  • Chlorosis: Not a true disease, but a nutrient deficiency (often iron) causing yellow leaves. It happens when inkberry is planted in high pH (alkaline) soil rather than its preferred acidic environment.

Common Pests

  • Scale Insects: Small sap-sucking pests that can attach to stems and leaves. They excrete a sticky substance called honeydew that leads to an unsightly black sooty mold.
  • Spider Mites: Tiny pests that sometimes appear during hot and dry weather, causing stippling or a dull, faded look to the leaves.
  • Leaf Miners: Larvae that tunnel inside the leaves, creating visible winding trails or blotches. Treatment: Prune and Destroy Mined Foliage.

Treatment: 1) For spider mites, blast it with a sharp stream of water to knock off active mites and break up webs. Focus heavily on the undersides of the leaves. 2) For all the fungal diseases listed above, as well as spider mites and scale insects, spray neem oil, horticultural soap, or copper fungicide (which is organic) directly onto the pests, making sure to coat all leaf surfaces and crevices in the late evening or early morning. Avoid spraying in direct sunlight or when temperatures exceed 80°F to prevent burning the plant’s foliage. Reapply every 3-5 days. Read here. For leaf miners, neem oil won’t work well. Apply Spinosad (organic).

Prevention: 1) Prune away heavily damaged or dying branches to improve airflow and reduce pest hiding spots. 2) Keep the inkberry (and other evergreen trees and shrubs) well-watered, but not soggy. Spider mites thrive in dry, dusty conditions, while fungal diseases thrive in wet, hot conditions.

Zona: 5 a 9

Altura: 4 a 8 pies

Extensión: 4 a 8 pies

Sol: Pleno sol a sombra parcial.

Mantenimiento: Bajo a moderado.

Atrae: Aves canoras, abejas y mariposas.

Inkberry Holly

(Treatment)

(Prevention)
